Overview of the GCAP Programs

The Graduate Centre for Applied Psychology (GCAP) currently offers three programs:

The programs are designed to allow for continuous, life-long professional development. You are invited to take up to two courses as a non-program student either for personal interest or to apply those courses towards a program once you are admitted. Many students enrolled in other university programs or seeking additional courses for licensing or certification join our initiative to pick up specific course requirements.

The Post-Graduate Certificate in Counselling is composed of courses drawn from the first half of the Master of Counselling degree program. Many individuals choose this program if they want to test their aptitude for graduate studies or the fit of counselling psychology. Others are invited to begin their studies in the certificate program if their educational background does not meet the entrance requirements for the Master of Counselling Program. Upon successful completion of the Post-Graduate Certificate, most students choose to apply to ladder those courses directly into the Master of Counselling program. Full credit is granted to qualified applicants for the six courses completed in the certificate.

The Master of Counselling Program is designed for those who are interested in becoming professional counsellors or counselling psychologists. The program offers specialization in two areas: Counselling Psychology and Career Counselling, and Art Therapy.

If you have already completed a Masters degree in counselling psychology or a related field, you may be interested in the Post-Masters Certificate program. You will need to complete a four-course certificate in one of the areas of specialization offered: Counselling Psychology or Career Counselling. This certificate offers another alternative for individuals who want to complete additional courses to meet licensing or certification requirements. We do not offer a Post-Masters Certificate in Art Therapy; however, an advanced diploma is offered in this area by the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute.
