Face-to-Face Requirements
Although many of the GCAP courses are offered entirely online, there are several face-to-face residency requirements for the programs. In most cases, students will be required to travel to Calgary, Alberta for these sessions, although we will attempt to hold them in other locations if there are sufficient numbers of students in those areas. The face-to-face instructional requirements for the Master of Counselling program are listed below.
All students begin their program in September, but are required to complete the online 5 week orientation the summer before courses start (typically starting the last week of June).
- Year I Summer Institute - First-year students are required to attend a three-week summer institute, which is usually scheduled to begin the second week of July at the end of their first year of studies.
- Optional Year II Summer Institute - The second-year summer institute is optional, although the range of modules available online for the assessment and interventions courses will be more limited. This occurs at the end of their second year of studies.
- Weekend Seminars - Students are required to attend one weekend seminar associated with each semester of practicum placement (for a total of two 4-day seminars). These seminars run Thursday through Sunday. This typically occurs during their third year of studies.
These requirements are non-negotiable and represent the minimum face-to-face instructional time involved in the program. By applying to the program, you are agreeing to meet these basic expectations. Depending on the course selections, students may increase the amount of on-campus activity involved in their program.
