Background of the Graduate Centre for Applied Psychology (GCAP) Programs
The vision for the Campus Alberta Applied Psychology: Counselling Program Consortium emerged from discussions among faculty from Alberta universities and major stakeholder groups in the professional community. All agreed that there was clear evidence of the need for an alternative model for graduate education for counsellors and psychologists in Alberta, across Canada, and internationally.
As a result of the strong evidence of the demand for such an alternative in Alberta and beyond, three of the universities in Alberta have worked together to develop an off-campus, distance training model to parallel the on-campus programs in Alberta.
- the Graduate Centre for Applied Psychology at Athabasca University
- the Division of Applied Psychology at the University of Calgary
- the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge
The initial program opened in January 2002 with 60 students in three areas of specialization (counselling psychology, school counselling, and career counselling). The program quickly grew to to a student body of approximately 350 graduate students. Each partner institution contributed various components to the program. In September 2007, a new administrative model was introduced with each of the partners in the consortium offering a separate but related graduate program. Four areas of specialization are now available to students through the consortium: counselling psychology, school counselling, and career counselling.
